tuftingThe best carpet inspectors have a deep understanding of carpet construction. They know how this versatile floor covering is made. This knowledge assists them in identifying problems and coming up with solutions. Moreover, nearly all commercial carpet is manufactured by tufting.

Tufting happens using multi-needle sewing machines, often as many as 1,800 total. The machine uses these needles to press rows of pile yarn tufts through a special backing fabric. Devices called loopers catch the yarn in place.

As the needles withdraw, the machine forms the tufts. Held in place, the tufts are then cut. After that, manufacturers add a secondary backing to add strength and stability.

Carpet manufacturers use several tufting methods, including:

  • Straight row
  • Shifting needle bar
  • Step over stitch
  • Overtufting
  • Needle punched

The many ways to tuft carpet produce different looks that appeal to a wide range of customers. Flooring inspectors must know how to recognize the different ways of tufting carpet. Then, they can understand and analyze any complaints.
