Manufacturing carpet has benefited greatly with modern technology, and anyone working with carpeting needs to know how the process works. There are also pieces of manufacturing equipment they need to know about and understand in order to gain the experience they need to really work with inspectors, clients, manufacturers and more. Two of these are creels and beams.
Creels are large racks that support spools of yarn during the carpet-making process. This framework can hold as many as two thousand bobbins of yarn. The yarn then feeds into thousands of needles that tuft the yarn into the primary backing material. It’s not unusual to have as many as a couple million tufts per square meter. The creels keep the yarn feeding evenly without tangling.
Beams are an alternative to creels and are the name for the large horizontal spools that hold the warp yarn. The yarn winds onto the beams and feeds into the machine that does the tufting process. Not as many companies use beaming, but it allows companies to make smaller batches of carpet and stock more colors.
Everything must operate precisely during the manufacturing process to create carpeting that is even and tightly woven. Creels and beams are an important part of the process.
