How Does Plasticizer Affect Carpet Backing?

How does plasticizer affect carpet backing? Carpet is one of the most popular choices for flooring in both residential and business settings. It is warm and inviting and comes in many colors and textures that will suit any space. Most clients focus on the carpet yarn. Equally as important, however, is the carpet backing, even though it is not seen.

Carpet backing provides stability and strength, and it holds the fibers tight. The backing must be flexible and strong. This is why manufacturers choose plasticizers for many carpet backings. This chemical compound blends with other ingredients for the backing as a flexing agent. This ensures years of high-performance carpet for clients of all kinds. Plasticizer adds to the polymers to boost the flexibility of the product. However, it can be any number of different materials, but the most common for flooring is mineral oil and hydrocarbon oil.

Plasticizer migration is one drawback of this substance. Therefore, this happens when a chemical reaction occurs between the product and the adhesive. Plasticizer migration can result in yellowing and stiffening of the backing. If the backing loses its flexibility, it can affect the durability of the product. In some cases, the chemical reaction can lead to problems with the bonding agents in the material and even in the subflooring. Consequently, it may lead to carpet replacement in some cases.

When it comes to carpet backing with plasticizer included, it’s important that clients choose carpet that is high quality and that the installation prep is thorough and clean. With the proper steps, clients can have incredible carpeting for many years to come.
