Can Hard Surface Flooring Really Wear Out?

Hard surface flooringHard surface flooring is an ideal choice for clients who want durability, easy maintenance, and beauty at work or in the home. One of the best parts of this type of flooring is that it lasts a long time. However, don’t confuse easy maintenance with no maintenance, or the hard surface flooring won’t look its best or last as long.

What maintenance is required for hard surface flooring? Each manufacturer has different recommendations for how to care for their products, and clients should always follow those specifications. Wrong cleaning products or processes can quickly damage the flooring material or expose it to conditions it cannot handle. For example, tile and stone can easily handle mopping, but too much water can turn hardwood and laminate into problem areas.

Sometimes, clients think that this type of flooring is indestructible and treat it poorly. Allowing grit and dirt to grind into the surface can damage hard surface flooring. Pushing heavy furniture across the floor can also cause damage. These actions can make the flooring wear out prematurely. One example involves dirt building up on a vinyl surface. Without frequent sweeping, the dirt grinds against the floor. This action wears down the protective wear layer. As a result, the patterns underneath begin to deteriorate.

Poor maintenance by the client usually causes premature surface wear. When taken care of, hard surface flooring can last for many years and look just as good as new.
