How Does an Inspector Check for Fuzzing?

Fuzzing is a serious problem with carpets. When a flooring inspector is called in to check on a claim of carpet fuzzing, there are definitely some steps they take to make that determination. Fuzzing is described as when fibers slip out of the yarn resulting in a hairy appearance on the carpet surface. In carpeting, it can be caused by a number of things, from excessive foot traffic to poor manufacturing to a vacuum brush that is too stiff.

First, the flooring inspector should look at the vacuum used to clean the carpet. They should check to see that the setting is the appropriate height and that it is not causing the fuzzing. After the vacuum has been ruled out, the inspector should take a close look at the fiber of the carpet.

The inspector may then use a roller covered in Velcro to investigate further. They should roll it several times over the carpet and then compare to the fuzzing rate scale. It is used to determine the level on the carpet, with 1 meaning there is severe fuzz to a 5, where there is little to none that are apparent. Depending on the results, the problem could be with the manufacturers and filament slippage.
