Wood flooring is one of the most popular choices for both residential and commercial spaces, and there are all kinds of options for color, texture, and quality. Like most flooring jobs, the key to success is proper installation. Flooring installers should always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for what needs to be done before, during, and after the installation.

Wood flooring comes in boxes to the job site. Because of the natural and unique nature of wood, there can be slight differences in the appearance. One of the key steps when installing a wood floor is to mix boxes of wood. This prevents noticeable differences in appearance. When installers lay out the flooring, the boards will look consistent and well-blended. If the installer just opens one box and installs it, then moves to the second box, there may be a real difference in the appearance of the planks when viewed side by side. Mixing the boxes of wood or taking wood pieces from each box alternatively ensures that the patterns are varied and spread throughout the floor area.

Installers should follow the manufacturer’s instructions for how many boxes of wood to mix. The general rule is to use at least two boxes. Wood flooring should look unique yet cohesive. Mixing boxes helps achieve that result. It also ensures an even distribution of wood pieces across the floor.
