spin finish

Spin finish is at term that refers to the process of adding to textile fibers during manufacturing. The purpose is to make the fibers easier to handle, no matter what they will be used for. In carpet manufacturing, a spin finish can be applied to the carpet fibers to help the filaments remain cohesive, avoid static electricity and keep the fibers lubricated for manufacturing. Fibers with a this kind of finish generally process better through carpet manufacturing machines. When things operate smoothly, the production process goes faster.

A flooring inspector can test for spin finish in the field in a quick and efficient manner. To test for it, the inspector should lightly mist a small area of carpet fiber with some distilled water. Using a bone scraper or bristle brush, the inspector should agitate the wet area. If the area foams after agitation, this is an indication of a spin finish. If there is no foaming, the carpeting has not been treated with it.
