Common Causes of Stair Tread Failures

Installing flooring on stairs can present unique challenges for the installer, but when done properly, it can lead to a beautiful and durable option for the customer. Stair treads provide additional support for foot traffic as it ascends and descends, hopefully preventing slip-and-fall accidents. While stair tread failure doesn’t happen very often, there are some circumstances where it may occur.

Stair treads should be installed on any smooth interior step that is dry and clean. The stair tread and the step must fit very tightly, with absolutely no slipping. This is the best way to ensure that the stair treads will do their job in providing a stable surface for people to walk. When they are not properly installed, there is a serious risk of a slip and fall accident occurring. Injuries, both mild and serious, could result from this kind of accident.

Use room-temperature materials, from the tread to the adhesive, for best results. Spread the adhesive evenly across the bottom of the stair tread so it provides full coverage. Set the stair tread into the correct position. After placement, roll the resilient tread into the adhesive to achieve maximum coverage. Use a hand roller to firmly secure the tread to the surface. Failure to properly roll the tread into the adhesive can result in slippage or improper placement.

When it comes to stair safety, stair treads can be a real asset in preventing slip and fall accidents, whether at work or at home. Keeping foot traffic safe is the ultimate goal, with aesthetics in second place. Proper installation goes a long way to ensuring the health and well-being of foot traffic on the stairs.
