Carpet raveling often triggers a carpet inspector to come to a job site. It’s important for the inspector to make sure they are familiar with all the different possible causes of carpet raveling. They also need to know how to look for clues as to the cause.
The first step is identifying specifically what type of carpet unraveling has occurred, such as zippered, pulled or sprouted. They also need to note whether the unraveling is happening in one particular spot or throughout the room.
Carpet unraveling localized to a small area often gives the carpet inspector a helpful clue. Generally, this happens when clients drag or roll nearby furniture. Other culprits could be a sharp edge of a vacuum, wheelchair, pets or something similar.
If the raveling is within a foot of the wall, the cause might be from knee kickers during the installation process. Similar raveling near the seams at the wall leads inspectors to guess at power stretchers used at installation. Seams unraveling in the middle of the room may be because of poor seam sealing. Other causes of carpet unraveling occur from localized chemical spills or de-lamination between the layers of backing.
All in all, the carpet inspector must use their experience and best judgement to determine the cause of carpet raveling on the job site.
