There’s no doubt that a hardwood floor brings beauty and durability to any room in the house. A proper installation job will ensure that there are no issues with placement or patterns. However, it’s almost impossible to install hardwood flooring without slight lippage or overwood between each plank. As long as the overwood meets the standards of the industry, it’s acceptable for this to happen and should not affect the overall appearance or use of the hardwood floor.
There is an acceptable level of overwood that is considered allowable by industry standard—usually about the height of a business card. Anything higher than that can cause problems with foot traffic. The evenness between floorboards and their neighbors is a critical part of the installation process, and a skilled installer can minimize or eliminate big discrepancies. Once the flooring is installed, slightly uneven edges can be sanded down to be more even.
If there is a significant amount of overwood or lippage at the height of the joints in wood flooring, many home owners and business owners will ask the installers to replace the boards to create a more smooth surface. It’s always a good idea to address issues of overwood during installation rather than have to go back and replace planks that have created an uneven walkway.
