Hard surface flooring is ideal for both business and residential buildings because it is durable and beautiful. With so many patterns, colors, styles and prices, hard surface flooring is often chosen for the workplace, especially over carpet.

Hard surface flooring is an umbrella term for all different types of flooring, such as hardwood, tile, concrete and more.  It works well in high traffic areas, and can add a special style to any room or building. While most hard surface flooring material is more expensive when compared to carpet, the life expectancy is indefinite. Carpet is only expected to last around 6 to 7 years

Hard surface flooring is not without its drawbacks, and there are several ways that business owners and their employees could abuse the material. Without proper care and cleaning, hard surface flooring may not live up to the manufacturer’s expectations.

Here are a few things that business owners, employees and maintenance personnel can do that might cause hard surface flooring to suffer:

  1. Doing maintenance wrong. This could mean that the material isn’t cleaned regularly or is allowed expose to too much moisture. Irregular maintenance schedules can result in uneven wear and tear.
  2. Ignoring maintenance. An inconsistent maintenance schedule allows for uneven wear and tear or might allow dirt and dust to build up, increasing the risk of a slip and fall accident.
  3. Forgetting the manufacturer’s instructions. When manufacturers create flooring material, they provide recommendations on cleaning products and procedures that will keep the flooring looking great and performing well. Not following these recommendations can result in big problems for the floor’s appearance and performance.
  4. Using the flooring inappropriately. Manufacturers provide specifications for use, heat tolerance, weight levels and even moisture and humidity. Ignoring these manufacturer specifications can result in poor performance by the flooring material.

Hard surface flooring is a smart choice for businesses of all types, but there is a lot of opportunity for abuse when the business owners and maintenance crews fail to take care of it or follow the manufacturer’s instructions on placement, use and more.
