When it comes to durability and beauty, few choices can match commercial tile flooring. Commercial tile flooring is extremely tough and impermeable, making it highly resistant to wear and tear. It’s also resistant to moisture and stains, which means that commercial tile flooring will look great for many years with just the standard maintenance required. As an added bonus, tile flooring is environmentally friendly, and doesn’t require harsh chemicals for cleaning, finishing or sealing.

If your company is considering commercial tile flooring in some, part or all of your workplace, here are 4 things all Utah businesses need to know about commercial tile flooring:

1. Choose the right tile.

Tile comes in a range of styles and surfaces, and choosing the right commercial tile is critical to avoid boosting the risk of slip and fall accidents at the workplace. Generally, tiles with rougher surfaces are recommended for walkways. It is not recommended to use glazed floor tiles or other polished porcelain tiles with low coefficient of friction (COF).

2. Proper placement.

Commercial tile flooring is not the best surface to use just anywhere. If the workspace is located in an area where there is constant water, grease or other substance on the floor, then tile is not the best choice. In the event that tile flooring is used in a commercial area, you should make sure that there is never any floor contamination by spills or substances that will increase the possibility of slips and falls. However, even with the utmost attention to proper cleaning of spills and debris, certain workspaces are simply not conducive to tile.

3. Proper maintenance and cleaning.

Tile requires a special cleaning regimen that uses just the right chemicals and processes to ensure that it is not too slippery. Improper maintenance and improper maintenance products can result in a build-up on the surface of the tile causing the tile to be slippery. Commercially available cleaners specifically designed for tile floors are sufficient for regular maintenance. Tile flooring does not need any cleaners that contain oils or soaps, just a diluted tile detergent. For sticky residue, a light abrasive cleaner will work well. Avoid using buffing and polishing equipment on commercial tile flooring because it can wear out the surface of the tiles over time.

4. Regular inspections.

To ensure that the commercial tile flooring in your workplace is as safe as it can be, consider using the services of a certified flooring inspector. Flooring inspectors will test the surface of the tile areas to determine that there is enough slip resistance to minimize the risk of slip and fall accidents. If the tile flooring is found to be a high risk area, the flooring inspector will have some recommendations on what you can do to increase the safety factor and make the commercial tile areas friendly to foot traffic.

This low-maintenance material is ideal for many commercial locations and will provide you with an elegant look and long-lasting beauty. With proper maintenance, an effective spill management plan and regular inspections, your commercial tile flooring will deliver many years of durable and trouble-free service.
