A well-prepared substrate is one of the most important steps in creating beautiful and durable floors. Moisture is a flooring installer’s biggest enemy because it can wreak havoc on the flooring material above it. Moisture can cause adhesive to break down, leading to absorption, warping, and even contribute to mold and mildew. There must be every opportunity to control moisture during the construction or remodeling process so that there aren’t problems down the road.
There are lots of different things that flooring contractors can do to correct excessive moisture problems within a concrete substrate. The first thing to do is to improve drainage procedures. You can accomplish this by adjusting irrigation systems, fixing broken pipes, and taking measures to reduce naturally occurring groundwater. Other options include applying a non-penetrating sealer to the concrete substrate. Of course, there should always be high-quality vapor barriers in place to reduce the amount of moisture that comes in contact with the flooring material.
When every effort is made to take care of moisture in the concrete substrate, it will be much more likely for flooring contractors to have happy clients who don’t have to worry about ruined flooring due to moisture.
