Vinyl flooring is known for being one of the most durable types on the market today, and it is finding its way into homes, schools businesses and more. Because it comes in a range of colors and patterns, it is versatile and the ease of cleaning and maintaining it makes it attractive for everyone. However, there are some things that vinyl floors simply cannot stand up to, and solvents are one of them.

Solvents are often found in cleaning solutions and they chemically dissolve oil, dirt and grease that makes its way onto the floor. Solvents are different than detergents, which lift up dirt and debris so that they can be cleaned up and off the surface of the flooring. Solvents do a fine job of dealing with some of the toughest dirt and stains, but when it comes to vinyl flooring, they can also do their job too well.

Solvents will stain, discolor and even eat away at the top layer of a vinyl floor. The chemical reaction that takes place when the solvent touches the material changes the flooring’s integrity and can lead to a number of problems with appearance and performance. It’s just not a good idea to use cleaners with solvents in them unless they are specifically recommended by the manufacturer.

Paying attention to what kind of products are being used on vinyl flooring will go a long way toward keeping it beautiful and long-lasting. Business owners and home owners need to make sure they know the best ways to maintain and clean their vinyl flooring.
