What is Roll Crush in Carpets?

carpet with roll crush damageWhat is roll crush in carpeting? In recently installed carpeting, you can often see half-inch bands across the width. The industry usually calls this condition roll crush. Clients may not be happy with what they see as a significant aesthetic problem with the carpet.

This effect will most often appear across the width of the carpet. When this happens, a band of the pile yarn becomes flattened. This is due to the weight of the carpet roll itself. This issue occurs especially often when workers stack several rolls on top of each other. Stacking carpet rolls can happen at the manufacturer’s plant, a warehouse, during shipping, or even at the carpet retail location.

You can sometimes eliminate roll crush on carpet by treating it with steam or very hot water. The fibers may recover and leave the carpeting as good as new. Other times, the crush has been so forceful that it remains even after several treatments. However, most of the time, the unsightly bands will be gone after proper treatment and time to recover.
