Did you know that carpet can shrink or grow? Many people understand that certain floor coverings like hardwood or laminate can shrink and expand due to humidity. However, most have never thought about how carpet can also shrink when subjected to certain conditions that are detrimental to it.

Here are just a few reasons why carpet might shrink or grow:

  • Too much moisture, from cleaning or spills, can cause carpet shrinkage, even with synthetic fibers.
  • Carpet made of natural fibers is over wetted, it can cause shrinkage as it dries out.
  • Overly hot cleaning water can cause carpet fibers to shrink.
  • Parts of the country with damp weather and excess humidity can lead to shrinking carpet.

The best way to avoid carpet shrinkage is to control the amount of water that comes in contact with the carpet. Cleaning companies should use the proper temperature and not overuse the water. Dehumidifiers can help with atmospheric moisture. Spills or flooding should be dried out slowly and carefully to avoid carpet shrinkage.
