While browsing through flooring showrooms, we’ve seen a lot of unique tile patterns that we really like. We’d prefer hardwood, though, so I’m wondering if we can achieve some of these patterns with wood instead.

Hardwood flooring offers more versatility than many people realize. You do not have to install it in only one direction. In fact, you can use many design options to create a truly one-of-a-kind look.
Design Options:
- Borders – Use borders to outline a room or the entire area where you plan to install hardwood. You can purchase decorative borders or have someone create a custom design.
- Feature Strips – Use feature strips to outline a room or define a specific area. For example, you can install an oak floor and create the look of a permanent area rug by outlining part of the floor with a contrasting wood such as mahogany or an exotic species. This approach lets you incorporate an exotic species without paying to install it across the entire floor.
- Medallions – Use medallions to highlight a focal point in a room or other area. A medallion in a foyer or in the center of a room can look breathtaking. Many manufacturers offer ready-made patterns, so you can simply choose one that inspires you instead of designing your own from scratch. Keep furniture placement in mind when planning a decorative medallion. Avoid placing furniture or an area rug over it where you cannot enjoy it.
- Diagonal – Installing hardwood on a diagonal creates a simple but distinctive pattern. Consult a professional installer before choosing this layout to make sure the pattern flows smoothly through angled areas of the room.
- Inlays – Hardwood inlays give you an opportunity to get creative. You can incorporate murals, panoramas, or scenes of beautiful landscapes. If you would enjoy looking at a piece of art for years, a hardwood inlay may be right for you.
- Herringbone – A herringbone pattern creates an elegant, classic look and requires more planning than a simple diagonal layout. You can keep it subtle or make it the focal point of the room.
- Parquet – Installers create parquet flooring by arranging wood pieces in geometric patterns. Many people associate parquet with gym floors, but manufacturers now offer beautiful, updated designs for residential spaces.
- Custom Designs – If you have an artistic eye or want something truly unique, create a custom border, feature strip, installation pattern, or medallion. Today’s technology allows designers and manufacturers to integrate almost any image into a hardwood floor.
Hardwood patterns are not for everyone, but if you want something a little different, ask your retailer or installer about the options for your space. These patterns usually cost more, but the investment can be worthwhile when you end up with a floor that stops traffic!
