Putting flooring material on stairs can present unique challenges to the installer, but when done properly it can lead to a beautiful and durable option for the customer. Stair treads provide additional support for foot traffic as it ascends and descends, hopefully to prevent slip and fall accidents. While stair tread failure doesn’t happen very often, there are some circumstances where it may occur.
Stair treads should be installed on any smooth interior step that is dry and clean. It’s important that the stair tread and the step is fit very tightly, with absolutely no slipping. This is the best way to ensure that the stair treads will do their job in providing a stable surface for people to walk. When they are not properly installed, there is a serious risk of a slip and fall accident occurring. Injuries, both mild and serious, could result from this kind of accident.
All the material being used, from the tread itself to the adhesive used to affix the stair tread to the step, should be room temperature for best results. The adhesive should be spread on the bottom of the stair tread and cover it sufficiently. Then, the stair tread should be set into the proper position. After placement, the resilient treads must also be properly rolled into the adhesive for maximum coverage. Using a hand roller, the stair tread must be firmly affixed to the surface. Failure to properly roll the tread into the adhesive can result in slippage or improper placement.
When it comes to stair safety, stair treads can be a real asset in preventing slip and fall accidents, whether at work or at home. Keeping foot traffic safe is the ultimate goal, with aesthetics in second place. Proper installation goes a long way to ensuring the health and well-being of foot traffic on the stairs.
