How Does Sunlight Affect Carpet?

It’s amazing how much direct sunlight can affect flooring.

Harsh UV rays can discolor many types of flooring, from vinyl to carpet. They can also break down some of the country’s most popular flooring materials. But what type of effects does the sun have on a typical carpet?

Sunlight can definitely cause discoloration in carpet. Ultraviolet rays in sunlight fade dyed fibers. It’s possible to get a patchy look or have a solid section of sun fading appear. In commercial or residential rooms with large, south- or west-facing windows, sun damage to carpet may be a problem.

Not only does exposure to sunlight cause the color of the carpet to fade, but it can also compromise the integrity of the carpet fiber. It can turn a once-soft carpet into a stiff and brittle area.

Sometimes, sun-faded carpet can be restored to its original look, but it all depends on how long the exposure has been taking place. In many cases, the fibers are so affected that they can no longer hold the dye properly. In other cases, carpet restoration experts can re-dye the sun-damaged areas and blend it in to the rest of the carpet for a near-flawless look.

I honestly did not know that carpet re-dye was an option. Do regular carpet cleaners do that or do you have to go to a specialist?

Color correction is a specialty done by many carpet repair techs. Do a search for carpet repair techs in your area.

It caught my attention when you said that sunlight can cause carpets to become stiff or brittle in addition to losing their color. I was catching up with my sister and learned she’s planning on having designer carpet installed in her townhome within the next month or so. I’ll have to share this info so she can see why it’d be a good time to invest in window tinting for her home as well!
