Carpet installers apply seam sealer to carpet edges before sealing them with seam tape. It prevents the backing and fibers from unraveling before installation. Seam sealer prevents the yarn from pulling free from the primary backing. Seam tape is what then holds the two pieces of carpet together. So how much seam sealer do they use on a glue-down installation?
Seam sealer must be carefully applied or there could be problems. If the sealer goes on too thick, it can create a hardened seam in the carpet that clients will see and feel. It can also get onto the surface of the carpet when applied sloppily. Carpet experts only apply a minimum of 1/8” bead to both seam edges in order to complete the job.
It’s important to properly apply the sealer on a carpet they plan to have glued down for installation. First, the installer should apply the sealer using the tip of the applicator. Then they must use a finger or other tool to smooth the sealer. The installer makes sure the sealer goes into the cut edges and fibers of the carpet. The installer must use the right amount of seam sealer and avoid putting it too high up on the carpet base. If so, the sealant will be invisible and provide years of long-lasting protection for the edges.
